Future-Proofing Your Vehicle: The FOTA Firmware Update Guide
Learn how Over-the-Air updates protect your investment.
In the world of automotive technology, smartphone operating systems update at a rapid pace. Apple releases a new iOS version or Google an Android update, and suddenly third-party accessories might experience connection delays.
To prevent your wireless adapter from becoming obsolete with every smartphone update, premium devices use a technology called FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air). This is exactly the same wireless update architecture used in modern electric vehicles.
What is FOTA?
Traditionally, updating automotive hardware required downloading specific files to a computer, formatting a USB stick, and manually installing the update – a highly error-prone process.
FOTA completely eliminates this problem. It allows your adapter to download system updates, bug fixes, and performance improvements directly via your smartphone's Wi-Fi connection – completely without cables.
Investment Protection: A wireless adapter without FOTA capability quickly becomes obsolete. FOTA ensures that the hardware you buy today remains perfectly compatible with tomorrow's smartphones.
How to perform an Ottocast FOTA update
Updating your Ottocast device takes less than three minutes and only requires your smartphone. Follow these steps:
- Connect: Connect your phone to the adapter as usual and wait until the CarPlay interface appears on the vehicle display.
-
System Access: Open the Safari or Chrome browser on your connected smartphone and enter the IP address
192.168.1.101in the address bar. - Check for Updates: If a new firmware version is available for your specific model, it will be displayed on the screen. Tap it to start the download.
- Do not disconnect: Wait until the progress bar reaches 100%. Do not turn off the engine during this process and do not disconnect the adapter from the USB port.
- Restart: Once the update is complete, the adapter will automatically restart. When CarPlay reappears on your display, the process is officially complete.
When should you update?
In the technology industry, the rule of thumb is: Never change a running system. If your wireless connection is stable and fast, there's no compelling need for a firmware update. However, if you notice longer startup times or audio delays after a recent smartphone operating system update, a quick FOTA update is the direct solution.
