How to Check Your Vehicle's Wireless Compatibility
Buying Guide | See the simple Cable Test and Check these Facts before Ordering.
While our product finder is a helpful starting point, the easiest way to ensure a smooth plug-and-play experience is to understand how your current vehicle system works.
Take a quick moment to watch the vehicle compatibility video and read through the four essential facts below.
Tap to watch: How to check if your vehicle has wired CarPlay.
1. The Simple Cable Test
As demonstrated in the video, the cable test is the most reliable way to check compatibility. Simply connect your smartphone to the vehicle using a standard data cable. If the native Apple CarPlay or Android Auto screen appears, your car has the necessary wired foundation and is ready for our wireless adapters.
2. Data Port vs. Charging Port
When performing the cable test or connecting your new adapter, ensure you use the primary USB data port (usually under the dashboard). If you use a charging-only port in the center armrest, your phone will charge, but the CarPlay system will not activate.
3. The BMW Exception
BMW vehicles are an exception to the cable test, as modern iDrive systems are fully wireless from the factory. If you drive a BMW, a standard adapter will not connect. You will need a specially designed device like the OttoAibox i3.
4. Product-Specific Details
A successful cable test usually means you're all set. However, certain display formats or equipment variants may have specific features. It's always advisable to check the specific product details before adding an item to your cart.
